Initial Examination

Your First Step Toward Lasting Oral Health
At Quality Dental Care, we believe that a healthy smile starts with a clear understanding of your current oral health. That’s why your initial examination is one of the most important appointments you’ll have with us. It’s far more than just a quick check-up—it’s a comprehensive assessment designed to give you clarity, confidence, and a personalised plan to move forward.
Typically with an initial examination, it is recommended that you have in mouth x-rays and a whole mouth jaw x-ray (OPG). This provides us with a good overview from which can then develop a treatment plan.
We will then present to you our findings, very often showing you pictures of problem areas and giving you a range of treatment options. Once you have decided on the option right for you, we give you a printout of the estimated fee along with any item numbers should you wish to check with your health fund to see if you are covered.
During the comprehensive examination, our team will check for:
- Tooth decay – including early-stage cavities that may not yet cause discomfort.
- Broken or worn fillings – which can lead to sensitivity or further tooth damage
- Cracked or fractured teeth – which may affect both appearance and function
- Misalignment or bite issues – that could be impacting your smile or causing jaw strain
- Signs of gum disease – including inflammation, recession, or bleeding
- Jaw joint (TMJ) concerns – such as pain, clicking, or restricted movement
- Chewing efficiency – to determine if function is being impacted
- Soft tissue changes – such as mouth ulcers, suspicious growths, or potential oral cancers
This detailed process ensures we’re not just looking at the surface—we’re assessing the full picture.
Diagnostic Imaging: Seeing Below the Surface
To provide the most accurate diagnosis, we recommend two routine in-mouth X-rays, as well as an OPG (orthopantomogram)—a panoramic X-ray that shows your entire mouth, jawbones, and surrounding structures. These diagnostic tools are essential in detecting hidden issues such as:
- Decay between the teeth
- Bone loss
- Infections at the root
- Developmental abnormalities
- Wisdom teeth positioning
These images allow us to plan treatments with precision and avoid surprises later down the track.

We understand that dental needs vary from person to person. For this reason, it can be difficult to provide exact treatment fees without first conducting a full clinical examination. After your initial visit, we’ll offer you a tailored plan with fee estimates provided as a range—so you’ll never be caught off guard. Please note, these estimates are before any private health fund rebates.
